“The greatest adventure is what lies ahead.” – J. R. R. Tolkien

Enjoy a month of daily inspiration with quotes based in travel, nature, and adventure. Through beautiful photos and motivational quotes, find your spirits lift and you curiosity about the world, and the strength inside of you, grow.

“Spread Love everywhere you go.” – Mother Teresa

There are people we all know who make the world around them shine and feel a little brighter when they are near. I aspire to be one of those people.

Who do you know who spreads love and inspiration everywhere they go?

Are you one of those people?

“Go where you feel most alive” – Unknown

Life is long and the world is big. There is a place in the world, or many, where each of us feels alive…find that place and go there often. Don’t waste your time where you think you should be, go where you are most happy and where you are following your songlines.

Where do you feel most alive?

“Traveling – it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller.” – Ibn Battuta

I love this old, red truck! We found it on a chilly fall day at a farm where we had gone pumpkin picking. It seems to have a lifetime of stories hidden away in it. Enjoy your adventures this year and find the magic in the stories they create.

“The mountains are calling and I must go” – John Muir

I have felt this call so many times and from so many places around the world. When I listen to that call, I feel my mind quiet down, my body relax, and peace fill my life. Yes, the mountains call to me, as does the ocean, the forest, and many other places in nature.

What calls to you? Where do you find your peace?

“Nature is not a place to visit. It is home.” – Anonymous

The sky is our roof and the grass is our floor.  I could not wish for a more perfect home. Hold tight to those places in nature and visit them often. Where do you go in nature that feels like home?

“I can’t change the direction of the wind, but I can adjust my sails to always reach my destination” – Jimmy Dean

We can’t always control what life sends our way, but we can control how we respond to it all. Do we see the potential and enjoy the unexpected or do we dwell on what was possibly missed? Choose how to adjust your sails.

“I haven’t been everywhere, but it’s on my list.” – Susan Sontag

Every time I travel, I learn about another great place to explore. Every time I move, I find myself dreaming of all the places I haven’t been to yet. The vastness of the world is exciting and there is a thrill in knowing that there is more out there to see than I could ever fit into one lifetime. But, I will happily try…

What’s on the top of your travel list?

“Not all those who wander are lost” – J. R. R. Tolkien

The world is large and there are so many places to visit and explore.  For some, just simply moving from place to place and living in the moment is what inspires them.  They are not lost, they are exactly where they are meant to be.

“Believe you can and you are halfway there.” – Theodore Roosevelt

Belief is a powerful thing. The way we view ourselves and the world around us colors the way we see our reality. I was once told that if you use the words always, never, or everyone, then chances are what you are believing is not true. Believe in the positive in the world around you and you will certainly begin to see more of it.

“And into the forest I go, to lose my mind and find my soul.” – Anonymous

I have found that the longer I am out on a hike or trek, the more I feel an ease within myself and the more I notice a rhythm that was previously missed. Each moment spent walking through the forest or in the mountains brings me closer to that feeling a peace. It’s a peace that I have never noticed in the midst of a city or when surrounded by a large number of people.

Where do you go to quiet your mind and find yourself?

“The world is big and I want to have a good look at it before it gets dark.” – John Muir

I have always loved this phrase, “The world is big.” It makes me think of the infinite possibility of places to go and people to meet. It reminds me that no matter how much we have seen or done, the world still holds many adventures for us.

What adventure is next on your list?

“Nature is pleased with simplicity.” – Isaac Newton

So often we fill up our lives and make them unnecessarily complex.  “Simplify” has become such a popular term these days. And rightfully so. What better time than now to look at our lives, decide what is serving us well in body and spirit, and let the rest go. Simplify.

“Explore. Dream. Discover.” – Mark Twain

Three words to live by! Set yourself free to dream and the possibilities are endless. Act in a way to make those dreams come true and the world is yours.

“In all things of nature there is something of the marvelous.” – Aristotle

In the hecticness of life, it’s easy to miss the beauty and inspiration in the world around us. When we take a moment to pause and look at anything in nature, grand or simple, we will see that beauty.  Find the marvelous in the world around you.

“Water flows free and wild, not aware of any boundaries or rules or traditions. Not bothered about anything gone or left behind, she eagerly rushes to new dimensions in her life knowing the best is yet to come. Learn to be like the soul of the water; clean, compassionate, loving yet strong enough to endure anything.” – Harshada Pathare

The idea of being free from any boundaries or past and ready to flow without restriction into any future, can be empowering, as well as slightly overwhelming. Moving beyond our supports can lead to a feeling of exposure that we are not used to. But, like water, when we believe in our strength and ability to handle what the future brings, that freedom is inspiring.

“Then one day when you least expect it, the greatest adventure finds you.” – Ewan McGregor

So often we look and search and plan for adventure, trying to force it to happen and feeling frustrated when life remains “normal”. But, if we focus more on looking for the beauty in each day and doing the things that inspire us, we are likely to realize that we are standing in the midst of that adventure afterall.

“Adopt the pace of nature.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

In society today, we are often expected to move through the day at an unnaturally fast pace. However, when we take the time to step back and observe nature, we see that it moves at a pace that is much slower and has more rhythm. As we observe this, we also feel our body, our breathing, and our thoughts slow down and find that rhythm.

“Stay close to anything that makes you glad you are alive.” – Hafez

The people and places that make us smile and make us enjoy the day are where we should place our time and energy. So often, we think we want things that are out of our reach, but if the journey to get them doesn’t make you smile, maybe it’s time to reassess if they are really what you need?

What makes you feel most alive?

“Look deep into nature, and you will understand everything better.” – Albert Einstein

We move at such a fast pace and with so many activities happening at once, that it is often hard to see either the big picture or the details. This quote reminds me that when we slow down and shift our focus, we can improve our clarity. There is a rhythm and a pattern in nature that unfolds itself the longer we immerse ourselves in it. That rhythm opens up windows into ourselves, as well.

“There’s a whole world out there, right outside your window. You’d be a fool to miss it.” – Charlotte Eriksson

I lived on a beautiful, quiet tropical island for years. In so many ways, it was paradise.  But, over time it started to feel that, rather than seeing the world, which was what originally brought me to the island, I was missing out on it.  The world is big and it was time to move on and explore it again.  Explore the world, no regrets.

“We travel not to escape life but for life not to escape us.” – Anonymous

There is so much to see in this lifetime and so much to learn. The world is full of beautiful places, people, and cultures. Traveling gives us the opportunity to experience this first-hand. It should not be viewed as a luxury you have to work towards, but as a way for all of us, individually and as a community, to learn and grow.

“It’s time to remember what it’s like to feel alive.” – Anonymous

Think about those moments that made you feel alive, energized, and excited about the possibilities of the world.  We should strive to make that an essential part of our lives, every day. Today is the day. What makes you feel alive?

“The mountains are calling and I must go.” – John Muir

One look at Kilimanjaro and I was hooked; my passion for mountains had begun.  There is something powerful and inspiring about mountains and I love the way I feel when I am surrounded by them or climbing one. It’s the feeling that I am exactly where I am meant to be.

“We live in a wonderful world that is full of beauty, charm, and adventure.” – Jawaharial Nehru

When we choose to focus on beauty, we will see it in the world all around us.  With it, we will see the potential this world holds for us. Focus on the positive.

“All things in nature are something of the marvelous.” – Aristotle

Whether we look at small objects or grand views, nature is beautiful and inspiring.  There is a purpose and an order in everything, but also an aesthetic quality that is soothing to the soul. Look for the marvelous in the world around and take a moment to admire it.

“Because in the end you won’t remember the times you spent in the office or mowing the lawn. Climb that goddamn mountain.” – Jack Kerouac

Seize the day! At times we all need to do the daily tasks of work and life, but be sure you give yourself plenty of time to live life to the fullest, as well.  Go out and do the things that make you feel alive. Build memories and live your dreams.

“Live the life you dreamed.” – Henry David Thoreau

How inspiring of a thought to simply live the life of your dreams? Put all fears and excuses aside and make your dreams your reality.

“The greatest adventure is what lies ahead.” – J. R. R. Tolkien

The possibilities of the future are endless and that, in itself, is the start of an adventure. The past cannot be changed, but the future is what we make of it. What will your adventure be?

“Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well-preserved body, but rather to skip in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming “Wow! What a ride!” – Hunter S. Thompson

This quote makes me want to run out and live life! Live life today, not somewhere down the line or with only half the effort to save something for later. Live life fully!

“Live in the sunshine, swim in the sea, drink in the wild air.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

These days, most of us spend much of our days indoors and surrounded by human-made objects and technology.  It’s important to also remember to take time to immerse ourselves in nature.

I hope you have enjoyed these quotes. See you next time!

    1. Thank you! It was fun putting all the quotes together. I’m working on the 2nd edition now, so please check back soon for more!

  1. My favorite quote is “The mountains are calling and I must go.”. In 2006 I did go! I moved to the mountains in southern New Hampshire, and it was the best move of my life. Everyday, I am surrounded by beauty, and although I have lived up here 15 years, driving around town and seeing the mountains ALWAYS puts a smile on my face.

You have some beautiful pictures here. Did you take them all yourself? I take about 99% of the pictures found on http://www.cruisingragtops.com

    1. I love that quote, as well! The mountains are beautiful. So glad you found yours! Yes, I took all the photos with a few exceptions that were taken by my husband. I am excited to check out your photos, as well! Nature is beautiful.

  2. I kept trying to pick a favorite one as I scrolled through the list but I changed it every time I read a new one! So much inspiration in one place! Instead of picking my top quote, I choose instead to add one. This quote is by Rumi. “You are not a drop in the ocean. You are the entire ocean in a single drop.” Words will change your life. Thank you for all the brilliant words here. 🙂
